Hiring Video: A Day in the Life

Objective: Provide an overview of the Verification Advocate role at Carvana for prospective new hires, a challenging position that combines auto loan underwriting with inbound customer service.

Company stakeholders, concerned with low retention during the intensive eight-week training program, requested a video highlighting the unique challenges and rewards of the position.

Planning

I began production by meeting with stakeholders to discuss their needs and goals, brainstorming multiple ideas in order to understand their personal visions for the project.

My first challenge was to sell our department directors on the benefits of a shorter video; to cover all of their initial requests would result in a video 8-10 minutes in length. I was able to convince them that a brief, punchy video — 2 minutes, 30 seconds maximum — would give us the most effective viewer retention.

Storyboarding and Scripting

With my key objectives in place, I drafted a storyboard, script, and shot list, collaborating with a senior member of our Media team, Edson Florez, to learn and benefit from his expertise. I selected a Verification Advocate with interest and experience in acting and recruited department leadership to fill the remaining roles during our brief filming window.

Filming and Editing

On a budget of $0, I filmed the video using my personal equipment , an iPhone Pro 12 and a DJI Osmo gimbal.

I recorded and edited the voiceover personally using an AudioTechnica AT2020 microphone and Adobe Audition.

Finally, I edited the motion graphics and final video using Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro.
